Nestled at the hilltop, this newly constructed tree house offers a unique venue for special zoo events and rentals. The design boasts an architectural marvel—a board-formed, curved, and tilted load-bearing concrete wall that seamlessly integrates with the natural surroundings.
Gift Shop and Learning Center Expansion
The project included a 3,000 SF addition and a 2,100 SF renovation to the existing gift shop and learning center. These improvements provide additional space to enrich the educational offerings and retail experience for visitors.
Scenic Overlook Platform
A new platform station has been introduced, offering the public breathtaking panoramas of the City of Grand Rapids. This feature not only enhances the visual appeal of the zoo but also serves as a tranquil spot for relaxation and appreciation of the city's skyline.
Tigerwood Decking
The use of Tigerwood (Astronium fraxinifolium) for decking adds both aesthetic and functional value. Known for its resistance to insects and high durability, with a Janka hardness rating of 1850, this choice of material ensures longevity and minimal maintenance.
The total area covered by the expansion is 13,690 square feet, demonstrating a substantial commitment to improving and expanding the facilities at John Ball Zoo.
This phase marks a significant milestone in John Ball Zoo's ongoing dedication to enhancing visitor experiences and supporting its mission of conservation and education.
